A good installer can make all the difference in the experience you have with your new heat pump. This page will give you tips on finding an installer that’s right for you.

Where to find a heat pump installer?

The MCS (Microgeneration Certification Scheme) is similar to the Gas Safe Register, but for low-carbon energy technologies instead of gas. Heat pump installers or companies that appear on the MCS installer finder will be certified and qualified to the standard needed to install a heat pump.

You’ll have to use an MCS-certified installer if you want to access the UK government’s Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant or Home Energy Scotland’s grants and loans.

A good place to find MCS-certified heat pump installers is using the MCS installer finder. If you’re in Scotland you can also use the Home Energy Scotland Renewables Installer Finder.

This list isn’t exhaustive. There may be other energy companies not listed that offer heat pump installations, so it’s worth checking other websites for offers too.

Tips for identifying a good installer

Search for reviews

Once you’ve found an installer, for example through the MCS installer finder, it’s a good idea to search for online reviews about their business and work.

Get three quotes

Ideally, you should get comprehensive quotes from at least three different heat pump installers. Most installers will provide you with a basic quote after your initial enquiry, and a comprehensive quote after an in-person, in-depth property assessment. Not only will this help you ensure you’re getting a good deal, but it’ll help you get a feel for the installer’s way of working and communicating.

In-person assessment

Reputable installers will conduct a comprehensive assessment of your property's heating needs by visiting your home. They will make a heat loss calculation and recommend the appropriate heat pump system for your specific requirements. This visit will sometimes cost a small fee, which is often subtracted from the final cost.

If you’ve already had an in-person assessment of your property from one installer, other installers may also be able to use this assessment to provide a comprehensive quote, without having to also visit your property.

Written agreement

Once you've chosen an installer, make sure all aspects of the installation are documented in a clear and detailed contract. This agreement should cover installation specifics, what’s included, warranties and payment terms.
